The Dead End is the biggest winner of this year’s Shanghai International Film Festival as it won three best actor awards and the best director. The movie also won the critics. Directed by Baoping Cao, stars Chao Deng, Yihong Duan, and Tao Guo, the crime thriller will be showcased in the 11th Chinese American Film Festival (CAFF).

The movie is about the redemption of three men with one common factor. A taxi driver who never takes credit for helping others, an auxiliary policeman who risks his life to serve justice, and a fisherman. These three men have one common factor: raising an orphan girl together. They live a normal life, until a new detective starts to investigate a suspended case.

The screenplay is adapted from the novel, Sunspot. The novel explores sensitive topics such as homosexuality, rape, murder, and death penalty. The movie successfully retains the best part of the original novel and the deep analysis of good and evil. The complex relationships between the police and criminals, between the three “bad” fathers and the orphan girl are thought-provoking.

Based on the fates of these three men, the best words to describe this movie are: breakthrough and indetermination. The movie talks about the topic of homosexuality. It is truly a surprise the movie passed China’s censorship. The storyline is somewhat complex. Each character is full of uncertainty. Nevertheless, the brilliant performance of all three leading actors convinces the audiences of the reality of the story.

Although it is a crime thriller, do not expect gun-firing scenes. Based on a novel with mediocre sales record, the movie is successful without special and visual effects and promotion. The audience is simply transported. Indeed, it is a breathless journey with the characters.
