The story takes place in Hu, an ancient city at the western border of Tang. To prevent the residents from injuring and killing by the demons, Zhongkui (Kun Chen) exorcise with his mentor Taoist Zhang. Zhongkui is the guardian of the city. He gets the dark crystal, which is the source of everything in the realm of demons, and stirs a war. During the war, Zhongkui runs into his love in the past, the Snow Girl (Bingbing Li), who belongs to the demons…

To achieve the ambitious design of many magical scenes, some 200 million Yen investment and the cooperation of international post-production are provided for this 3D magic fantasy movie. Regarding the main character, Kun Chen risks his usually handsome and clean image and becomes this bearded exorcist. The production team designs four appearances for Zhongkui, which takes the makeup and costume team 8 hours to get Kun Chen ready when Zhongkui changes his form.

Bingbing Li, on the other hand, is amazingly beautiful and reminds people of Frozen. It is the first time Bingbing and Kun have worked together again before their last movie together years ago.

Regarding the production, Zhongkui: Snow Girl and the Dark Crystal invites one of the most advanced post-production teams in the world to finish the movie: Weta Workshop of New Zealand, who is responsible for the special effects in the Hobbit, designs character and setting models; Macrograph from Korea spends 7 months on producing more than 1200 scenes with special effects; Macrograph from Hollywood makes the final fighting scene in which the battle between Zhongkui and the King of Demon takes place.

One example of the exciting visual effects, a CGI close-up shot of Zhongkui’s pupil and the scene where the Snow Girl saves Zhongkui from his insanity by her tears takes the post-production teams 7 months to finish.

Despite being a traditional story, Zhongkui: Snow Girl and the Dark Crystal is a magical fusion of modern technology and modern values. God and evil are no longer discussed on a bipolar scale. More flesh is given to the development of the characters. Subscribe to the 11th CAFF to get more information about this romantic and magic movie.
